Volunteer FAQs

What type of person is HAHA looking for?

We are looking for enthusiastic and energetic people who enjoy working with animals, children, and adults. A sense of humor and patience are always helpful, too.

When and where are HAHA sessions?

We currently offer sessions Monday through Friday 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM at the Moran Family Stables at 10437 SW 53rd Street, Topeka, KS 66610. Session times may vary throughout the year due to client schedules and weather.

Are you accepting new volunteers?

We start new groups of volunteers once every quarter. Each quarter during a HAHA break, we will hold an orientation and begin training for those who are interested in committing to the program. Please fill out a Volunteer Application, and we will contact you and let you know when the next orientation is scheduled.

Is training provided for those who don't have horse experience?

Yes, training is provided for all volunteers, regardless of their previous horse experience. For volunteers who have experience with horses, training is necessary so that our clients see a consistent picture of how things are done at HAHA. For volunteers with no horse experience, the training serves as an introduction to horses and equine-facilitated psychotherapy. During lessons, new volunteers are mentored by those with more experience.

Is there an age requirement?

We have a minimum age requirement of 18 years old, and volunteers will be assigned duties based on their experience and the observations of our riding instructors. This age requirement is due to the mental and emotional maturity required to work with clients in a therapeutic environment.

What about community service requirements and/or school projects?

We ask that volunteers who are performing required community service commit to a minimum of 20 hours in exchange for training (these hours can be scheduled over an arranged period of time).

What is the inclement weather policy?

Because we have an indoor riding arena, most weather will not affect our sessions. In general, during severe thunderstorms or in extreme temperatures, sessions will be canceled. In case of inclement weather, check the Hope and Healing Academy Facebook page.
